Cheeseburger Cassserole

Isn't this a pretty picture? The golden crust dotted with sesame seeds is quite lovely. If only it had tasted as good as it looked. I SO wanted to love this, but it just alright to us. Honestly, the taste is very similar to a McDonald's cheeseburger. I like McDonald's cheeseburgers, but it just not what I wanted this to taste like.

On the plus side, the new cookware performed perfectly and cleaned up like a charm. I learned that for our current stove, the maximum of "medium" suggested just will not be quite high enough to brown and boil to my satisfaction.

If you want to try this recipe, have at it. Both the Pillsbury site and this page seemed to like it a lot. It was fun dish to make, but "alright" dishes don't go into my own make again pile.

Cheeseburger Casserole (adapted from here)
1 lb ground meat
1/2 onion diced
1/4 cup diced dill pickles
1/4 cup water
1/2 cup ketchup
2 T mustard
salt and pepper to taste
1 8 oz  container crescent rolls (there is a seamless variety now)
6 slices American cheese
1 egg (for egg wash)
1 tsp sesame seeds

Preheat oven to 375F. Brown meat and onions, drain if needed. Stir in pickles, ketchup, water, and mustard.   Season with salt and pepper. Pour meat mixture into an 11x7 (2 quart) casserole and top with cheese slices then the crescent roll dough (flat on top). Brush with egg wash and sprinkle sesame seeds on top. Bake 20-30 minutes until golden brown.
