Yesterday afternoon, MH picked Tot up from daycare. I arrived home a couple of minutes before they did. I was getting my things together in the car when I got a message from MH that they were about to turn onto our street, and that I needed to come outside to see them.
As I got out of the car, they were pulling in the driveway. MH rolled down Tot's window, and I smiled brightly at him. Tot said something to me and then crumbled into sad, pitiful crying. He was quite possibly the saddest I have ever seen him. I looked to MH to decipher what was said before the crying started, and he told me that Tot's rocket flew out the window on the drive home.
Tot and his friends had made rockets at daycare this week. He was bringing it home and letting it fly in the wind from the open window. However the wind caught it and sucked it right out. He was crushed.
MH told me that they made them from toilet paper rolls with paper cones for the top. When MH described it to me, I figured we could reconstruct one at home. So yesterday evening, Tot and I constructed a rocket. Since I didn't see the first one, I was really hoping that our new one would make an acceptable substitute. Tot only made one suggestion to the finished piece, it needed his name on it (all daycare crafts are obviously labeled with the child's name). Considering the fact that he carried it around all night and back out to the car this morning, I going to say that he liked it.
THEN this morning, Tot was having a rough time because every single day, he is disappointed all over again when he is told again, just like the day before it, that he cannot take a toy into daycare but that he may bring his lovey if he would like. Today he was determined to make a trade (my Jake? my cup? my rocket?), and was very upset when we stood firm (again, just like every single day). We saw his teacher, and she just HAD to ask about the rocket. Oh my goodness. I explained that the older rocket met the wind but we made a new one. Come to find out the whole reason she decided to make rockets was because of Tot and his fascination with them. Now I am as glad as Tot that we decided to make a substitute rocket.
